It was a close race between this game and Shin Megami Tensei IV. I will continue to defend this game as the proud Nohrian scum that I am. It felt so fresh, and even if the execution wasn’t perfect (and there were things I’d change if I could), it still earns a place on this list. And no game tested your tactical acumen of this trilogy more than Conquest, while also turning away from the typical FE story to try to do something truly different. Fates fixed so much, and made Fire Emblem feel like tactics mattered more than luck for the first time. But looking back, Awakening has a very cliche’d story and some iffy mechanics, as well as poor balancing and way too much reliance of RNG, taking some of the Strategy away from the Strategy RPG. I even bought the game for someone else to get them into Fire Emblem. I think I beat that game in a solid week, and ended up buying it for myself and playing through it again immediately. He personally lent me his copy of the game just so I could try it. But a friend of mine was very persistent in convincing me to play it. My next tryst with FE was renting Path of Radiance, and I didn’t really get too into it. Didn’t get far, but it was an interesting piece of history. Not quite an old fan or a new one, I began my experience with Fire Emblem playing an untranslated ROM of the original NES title. Anyway, I’ve mentioned at least a handful of times what my complicated history with Fire Emblem is. “But Hero! Why not Three Houses?” Because I haven’t completed the whole story of that game yet. “But Fates is so bad!” Shut your dickhead mouth and stop trying to change my opinion.
